Just quilting

I need to move on this since it's in the dining room and that's where the tree is supposed to go.

There have been a few turns of the quilt taken.

For some reason, I decided to quilt in brown thread. Probably because I have two spools of brown quilting thread and when else would I use it? The black squares are quilted in black.

    Is it special thread, then? Doesn't ordinary thread work?
    (I'm thinking of having a go with my new machine.)
