Next up

Well, I finally put the borders on this baby quilt and tomorrow I will find a backing and get it on the frame. Tonight I will be quilting with the Champagne Quilters. We are using up some of our stash and making lap quilts. We found some pre-printed panels and that's what we are working on at the moment.

It's funny, but I wasn't all that keen on the quilt before but I really like it now that the borders are on. I went with a paler blue for the outside border. There is this colour in the blocks. The other blue was a tad darker but it just didn't feel quite right.

I love the colour of my geraniums. They are just on the back deck and I can see them whenever I am in the kitchen.

The bluejays were a bit loud early this morning.

The sun was in the way and that's why these photos are so dull. Click on them so you can see them a bit better. That is a pear in the tree. We didn't get many last year and it looks like there are even fewer this year. The squirrels and raccoons like them and I suppose the birds do too but there really aren't many on this tree. Perhaps it's too old or needs pruning.

A hummingbird's plight

A true story with a happy ending.

This is not such a clear picture but it is a hummingbird that got caught in a sun porch. The poor little bird keeps batting against the window hoping to get out.

A Calliope Hummingbird was gently captured and set free but ..

it wasn't the first time it happened. Another Calliope was set free days before and ...
.
there was even a little Rufous Hummingbird that got caught in the sun porch. It too was captured and taken outside. They are so very cute and I'm glad that none of them were injured. They tend to exert a lot of energy and get tired quickly, batting their wings against the window. My son-in-law knows exactly how to handle them so that they are gently captured and released.

Another province - Part 2 - Bird watching

Not all of the birds we see on a daily basis are wild. Some of them are found on farms or in the city. These are egg laying chickens.
Two kitties just lounging around. They are both good mousers. Unfortunately, a bird or two falls prey to their hunting skills. The tabby is Stan Lee and the other one adopted Stan Lee and his home and so, for lack of a better name, is called Orange Cat. Super friendly.

This is the neighbour's cat. He has no tail and is rarely seen. I guess he's the shy kind.
There are lots of birds that are in the area. I already showed you the male and female American Goldfinches but there are so many more. Two that I didn't get photos of are the beautiful Rufous Hummingbird that is a rusty-orange and Anna's Hummingbird that is green with a red head. They are hard to capture standing still - so to speak.

You may have to click on the photo to enlarge it. There is a robin right in the middle of the picture. I basically shot this photo blind. I knew it flew into the tree and I just aimed and shot.

A Hairy Woodpecker hanging off a piece of deer fat. He seems to like it.

This one is a Downy Woodpecker. Both are very similar in colouring but the Hairy Woodpecker is larger and has a longer beak.

These gorgeous little birds with the red colouring are Purple Finches. They are quite striking but have no purple at all on them. They are similar to the House Finch.

A Ruffed Grouse just waiting to have it's photo taken.

Then, of course, there was that Bald Eagle just hanging around one day. It did have a mate the first time I spotted it.

I will leave you today with a photo of these two pair of Evening Grosbeaks.
