New wall hanging

I got tired of looking at my little wall hanging of a red bird sitting on a branch covered in snow and wanted something brighter and more in keeping with the summer season.

I think I started this little wall hanging in 2021 but it sat around waiting for me to decide to finish it. I found it just at the right time. It's machine quilted and now hangs in my hall. It was a free pattern I found somewhere on the internet and is 11 inches by 23 inches.

Bob the Snowman

He's done.

Bob the Snowman was a kit that I purchased a few years ago from The Quilt Patch in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Earlier this year I put the kit together minus all the buttons. Since I had a lot of other sewing to get done, poor Bob languished for months unfinished. Everything was a go since he was together with the backing and batting. I machine quilted him, bound the quilt and then added the buttons. Part of his scarf is 3D. The label and hanging sleeve were put on this morning and I can now cross Bob off my list.

I think I'll put a quilt on the frame now and do some hand quilting.

A really old quilt

My daughter Laila, who lives in BC is in possession of one of my very first quilts. It used to hang in our kitchen on the wall (before renovations in 1989) and eventually the sun did fade it a bit. I'm fairly certain that it was some kind of commercial pattern but it's been so long that I cannot tell you who put out the pattern.
Unfortunately, I never did sign it or date it, as I do now, so I have no idea of exactly how old it is.

It is totally machine appliqued...

with a bit of hand embroidered detail on the wing and...

some french knots for the eyes.
I did machine quilt it but just the around the blocks. I didn't quilt any of the detail. It most likely has a polyester batting since that is all I used to use. It's still one of my most often used battings since I hand quilt.

It was nice to see this old quilt. As you can tell, the fabrics are really old. These were the only types of quilting fabrics available to us in the 1980s. I still don't like prints and the plain fabrics were polyester/cotton broadcloth. There were solid fabrics in cotton available in quilt stores but the prices were quite high. Poly/cotton broadcloth had a huge variety of colours to choose from too, whereas the cottons were extremely limited in choice. Things sure have come a long way.

Done, Complete, Finis

Finally.

It's flat.

It has a batting that is half cotton, half polyester. Fabricland had a sale one day and I decided to buy this since I didn't have a big enough piece of cotton batting for this quilt. There were so many flat batts to choose from so I picked one in the middle price range.

It's bound with the lightest fabric since I had long pieces already cut and it was just an easier option. It's quilted across the width except for the last row - as shown below.

The last pieced row on both ends was easier to quilt going down - as shown above.

I'd like to thank my trusty little Singer - my favourite back-up machine (my main machine is an old computerized Kenmore.) This Singer is the one for which I purchased the walking foot.

And now you can all go and view what others are up to at the Needle and Thread Network.
