Truly Canadian

Did you know that there were three Canadian Prime Ministers with the name of Mackenzie? Yes, three.

And did you know that the largest and longest river system in Canada is the Mackenzie River?

Did you know that the River Severn is the longest river in the United Kingdom? Did you know that here in Canada - actually in Ontario, we have a Severn River, Severn Lake, Severn Township, the Trent-Severn Waterway, Fort Severn and Port Severn?

Why all the Canadian trivia?

Well, last Sunday, the 28th of September, my son Mark and his lovely wife Kate had two little twin girls born to them. Twin A and Twin B as they were known in the hospital but the real names that were picked for them were:

Mackenzie Katherine

Severn Annikki

No one stayed in the hospital for long - 48 hours and that was it. Birth weight was 5 lbs. 5 oz. for Mackenzie and 5 lbs. 2 oz. for Severn.

Not bad birth weights for twins born at 37 weeks. Both were, and still are, very healthy.

The family is doing fine and the extended family is overjoyed.

Still...

knitting little hats for my charity of choice, the Silent Children's Mission.

I bought the variegated yarn in British Columbia and I have a wee bit left for one or two more hats.

This is the laundry basket full of flannels that I found in my sewing room. Kinda hard to miss, eh? Well, stuff was piled on top and when I unearthed it, I was a bit surprised. Going through the pile was a lot of fun. I found some novelty flannels that I incorporated in Patric's rag quilt.

It's amazing what you find when you're looking for something else. Beside this laundry basket is another one and when I took stuff off the top of it, I found patterns. I haven't gone through them yet.

I'm still looking for binding fabric for my youngest daughter's quilt but I really do think I have to go out and buy some brown. BTW, my sewing room is only about the size of a small bedroom - 8' X 10'. My family wonders why I have branched out into another bedroom (or two) to hold my back-up sewing machine and knitting yarns...

Around the World Blog Hop

Today is my turn to participate in the Around the World Blog Hop. I was asked by Satu, of Quilttales (go visit her blog - she has an adorable quilt assistant) if I would like to take part and even though I was still in British Columbia visiting my daughter and her family, I said yes.
I figured that I would have some time once I got home to compose something for this blog post. Little did I know just how busy and tired I would be. However, I have managed to put something together for this post.

1. What quilting/sewing thing am I working on? 

At the moment I am sewing cushion covers for a rocking chair that my daughter-in-law wants.

It's in the babies' room and the walls are yellow so that's the reason for the colour. I'm not 

usually one who uses yellow. I am more of a blue/green person. I also love gray.

I am also knitting little sweaters for my twin grand babies who are due anytime now.

 I decided to add some thin batting to one side of the cushion.

This is the quilt that I am planning on putting on the frame soon so I can hand quilt it. 

 My theme for making things for the twins has been green and purple (or mauve.)  

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre.

I haven't got a clue how my work differs from others. However, I do hand quilt and there 

aren't many people who want to take the time to hand quilt. Personally, I find that there is 

too much quilting on quilts that are machine quilted. It makes for a heavy quilt. 

I am not a follower of any line of fabric and I purchase what I like. I don't follow fads. At the

moment I am trying not to purchase any new fabric so that I can use up what I have. Having 

quilted for over 34 years, I have a lot of fabric in my stash.

 This quilt was hand quilted and just needs to be bound.

Many of the fabrics were in my stash. 

 I made this quilt for my second grandson, Patric. It is hand appliqued and hand quilted.

3. Why do I write/create what I do? 

First off, I go to quite a few quilt shows throughout the year and I post photos of the quilts

on my blog. I have always taken photos of quilts at quilt shows but as my husband says,

with the advent of digital photography, I am not spending money developing the photos.

I know that there are a lot of people out there who are not anywhere near a major city or

a quilt guild so they don't get to see quilt shows. There is always something inspiring one

can find at a quilt show. (check out previous posts)

Secondly, I also use my blog as a personal diary of things that I am working on and things 

that I complete. At times, I find that it helps me keep on track and helps me to finish what I 

started. I make quilts for various reasons. I have always made wall hangings but now that

I have grandchildren, I am making bed-sized quilts.

 
4. How does my writing/creating process work? 

I don't know. I get inspiration from a lot of things. Magazines, quilt shows, blogs, quilt guild 

meetings - there are a lot of places where I find inspiration. There are a few bins with quilts 

in progress and I am hoping to work on emptying them one by one.

Now it's my turn to tag a couple of quilters. I chose these two ladies because they are quilters 

who are unique in what they do and ir you will, they quilt "outside of the box." They will be 

posting their answers to these questions next week, October 6th.

Gina, of Clay and Fiber blog does some amazing things with, what else, clay and fibre. I 

have purchased a few thing from her Etsy shop. Great service and wonderful items. She also

spends part of her summers in British Columbia and has some great photos from there - and 

also from her backyard in Florida.

Caroline, or Carli, of Good Earth Quilting blog does her own thing in her own way. She loves 

crazy quilting and lives in northern British Columbia. She likes hand work and is now working 

with hexagons.
